You need to look at the MIB definitions for that particular device. Not all devices have an SNMP agent which supports CPU and/or memory - although most Cisco devices do, so check the Cisco MIB. Find the OID that you want, and then MRTG will be able to retrieve the number for you. You'll need to have appropriate MRTG definitions for graphing it, though.

If you look in the extras directory of routers2, you will find cfgmaker_host, which is a cfgmaker script to probe the standard host_mib settings and generate a MRTG configuration file for them, if they exist. This works with some server SNMP agents.

You can get a lot of MIB definitions on which also has a search engine.

Back on the board....

folks are finally starting show interest in how their systems are performing, so wanted to ask a few quick questions....

1. when using cfgmaker_host, most of the parameters such as --global "workdir.... or --workdir by itself will return an error. the text in the cfgmaker_host file indicates it follows the same format as cfgmaker. not sure what I'm doing wrong.

2. I downloaded a boat-load of mibs from mibdepot into the /getif 2.1.3/mibs directory and when I run getif against an IP address, a whole new set of mib strings appear under the enterprise and private sections. With these new mibs, I can find mib strings for Call Manager, WIC's, VoIP calls and just about every other imaginable item you'd ever want to track.

How can I add these new mibs where mrtg or snmp_util or another program can call them versus adding each one in the cfgmaker command line?

Thanx again, Stevesh, Tobias and Mr. Rand for a great open product!

thanx again,

1). cfgmaker has advanced considerably since cfgmaker_host was written. It doesn't support any of the more complex options at all. The documentation is now in error...

2) You can specify the OID numerically and MRTG will recognise it. MRTG now has (I believe) a LoadMIBs: directive which lets you use symbolic names from MIBS. See the MRTG documentation. snmputil probably has a similar option, or will use a directory such as /usr/share/snmp/mibs or similar to hold them.
