Hi everybody,

I am looking for a howto about Measuring Traffic of a Linux box with mrtg and snmp. I was not able to find a appropriate one.

My Setup:

One server which is already running routers2 to measure a lot of network devices.

Second server is generic server with Debian Linux installed. On this one I want to run snmpd to report the transferred bytes of the network interfaces.

Alright, I am a step closter to my goal.

I am able to read the network statistics from the server but they seem to be not correct. During testing my switch says 400 MBit and the server shows only 7 MBit.

I am using snmp protocol version 2. (so I am also using 64Bit counter, right?)

Does anyone have an idea on this issue?

Can you post a section of your MRTG config file here?

If the interface in question is transmitting about 400Mbps (a lot of data!) then of course you need SNMPv2 and the HC counters. We need to be sure that you're actually using SNMPv2.

Glad to hear it is working OK now. Not sure why adding the MIB helped, but I'll remember this trick for the future.
