That however wont save you if you change or upgrade equipment.

I had this problem, I was using SNMPc for monitoring my network and other network engineers either kept changing subinterfaces or did a few IOS upgrades on the core routers and that usually meant reconfiguring all my interface status checks as well as re-running my mrtg config makers.
So I m using this command ever since and no worries.
The reference by name however remains an issue for me as well, i cant manage my bri interfaces because of it.
The question is can I change the reference the mrtg uses in order to avoid changing the entire config file?
e.g. can i change
Target[tralalainterface]: 4:xxxx@192.168.1.111:
to Target[tralalainterface]: bri1:xxxx@192.168.1.111:
or do i need to put this in a separate config file with the option
--ifref=inteface number (cant remember the option syntax, i ll have to look it up)
My guess is I have to put in the option and use the interface snmp index number.
